Levi Igloos – Golden Crown welcomes guests throughout the Northern Lights season, from late August until early April. During these months, the nights are dark enough for northern lights hunting, and the glow of the midnight sun will not disturb your rest beneath the glass roof of your igloo. While the depths of winter are the most popular time to experience Lapland, Levi offers a wealth of activities and unforgettable moments across the entire aurora season. In summer our doors close, giving us time to prepare for the return of darkness, starry skies and the magic of a new season.
When the Sky Comes Alive
The Northern Lights season extends from late August until early April, offering countless opportunities to witness one of nature’s most enchanting spectacles. This mesmerising phenomenon often begins as a pale green shimmer on the horizon, gradually intensifying until it ripples, flickers and dances across the sky in flowing waves of colour and light. Shades of pink, violet and even red may appear, painting the Arctic night with breathtaking brilliance.
Even locals who have grown up under these skies still stop in wonder, for the aurora never reveals itself in quite the same way twice. Each display is unique, a fleeting and magical moment that lingers in memory long after it fades. To witness the Northern Lights is to experience the Arctic at its most extraordinary. A quiet miracle of the northern night you will carry with you forever.
Winter Season
The winter season in Levi begins in early December, when the first heavy snow creates perfect conditions for classic activities such as snowmobiling, husky rides and reindeer safaris. At this time of year the polar night sets in, bringing with it the enchanting blue moments that bathe the landscape in deep twilight tones. Although daylight lasts only a few hours, the snow amplifies the light, and on clear nights the Northern Lights often illuminate the sky. From December through February temperatures can drop very low, heightening the crisp, Arctic atmosphere.
As midwinter arrives, the scenery shifts once more. Snow-laden “tykkylumi” trees stand like frozen sculptures, and the skies take on soft hues of pink and marshmallow in January and February, creating a dreamlike panorama. Christmas brings its own sense of wonder, offering the chance to meet Santa Claus and embrace the true spirit of the season, surrounded by the snow-draped landscapes of Lapland.
Please note, we sell out Christmas very early on.
Early Spring Season
From early March until late April, Lapland awakens into its early spring season. The long polar nights have ended, yet in early March the lingering darkness still provides excellent chances to witness the Northern Lights. As the days grow longer, a beautiful balance unfolds between crisp, starlit nights and bright, invigorating days.
The sun climbs higher in the sky, casting its golden light across the snow and making the landscapes shimmer in brilliant white. With milder temperatures and abundant daylight, this is the perfect time for outdoor adventures. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing all find their peak, allowing visitors to explore the Arctic in the radiant light of spring.
Autumn Season
Autumn in Lapland stretches from late August to November, bringing a season of rich colours and crisp air. Early autumn nights are clear and snow-free, offering some of the best conditions for photographing the aurora borealis. As September progresses, the landscape bursts into vibrant shades of gold, red and orange, making daylight hours just as captivating for photography and outdoor pursuits. Hiking, biking, golfing, horse riding and paddling can all be enjoyed in the invigorating autumn air. By late October the first snow usually arrives, and by mid-November a permanent cover has settled. Many outdoor activities continue well into early winter. Simply dress warmly, and we will be glad to help arrange memorable experiences through the wide range of services in Levi.
As the season draws to a close, mystical November brings a special stillness before winter’s arrival. It is a time to pause, embrace the quiet atmosphere and enjoy the cosy comfort of your own igloo.
