Sustainability & Responsibility
Nature is at the very heart of Levin Iglut – Golden Crown. It is our home, our heritage and the foundation of everything we do. Living amidst the endless beauty of Lapland is both a privilege and a responsibility, which is why we see luxurious guest comfort and environmental care as inseparable.
When developing our services, we strive to ensure that the purity and diversity of Arctic nature is preserved for future generations, while also safeguarding the well-being of our guests and staff. We take sustainability seriously and are committed to continuously improving the way we operate. Our work is guided not only by international sustainability programmes but also by the everyday choices we make on site.
Green Key & Sustainable Travel Finland
In June 2021, we were proud to receive the prestigious Green Key award — one of the leading international standards for environmental responsibility in the tourism industry. The certificate is granted only to companies that meet strict criteria and commit to ongoing third-party audits.
In August 2023, we were also awarded the Sustainable Travel Finland label, a recognition of our long-term dedication to sustainable tourism. Managed by Visit Finland, this national programme acknowledges not just environmental efforts, but also socio-cultural and economic responsibility, ensuring that tourism develops in a balanced and sustainable way.
“Environmental matters are not new to us – we have taken them into consideration since we started operating,” says Eva Lindström, our Head of Sales and Environmental Issues. “Awareness among guests and tour organizers has grown, and we wish to promote it even further with the help of internationally recognized programs such as Green Key.”
Our Daily Environmental Actions
Ecological heating – Our igloos and other facilities are heated with green electricity, geothermal heating and air-to-air heat pumps.
Reducing plastic – We do not use bottled spring water, as Finnish tap water is among the purest in the world. All drinks are served in glasses or glass bottles.
Recycled materials – The working clothes of our restaurant staff are made from recycled materials, just to point out one clear example of this.
Eco-friendly cleaning & saving energy – We use ecological detergents and encourage guests to reuse towels to conserve energy and water.
Reducing light pollution – We minimise artificial light, keep lights on only when needed and encourage guests to enjoy the natural northern sky.
Locally sourced products – Our souvenir shop offers Finnish design and handicrafts and our restaurant prefers local ingredients. Mushrooms and berries are often picked by our own staff.
Well-being & Accessibility
Responsibility also means caring for people. The well-being of our staff is of utmost importance to us: we provide healthcare, training programs and opportunities for exercise.
Outdoors in the arctic weather can be challenging, but we provide information and guidance to support accessibility during your stay.
Join Us
Sustainability is not a single achievement but an ongoing journey. With Green Key and Sustainable Travel Finland guiding us, we continue to sort waste more efficiently, expand the use of organic produce, and seek new ways to operate responsibly.
As Eva Lindström concludes:
“We hope our guests appreciate the work we are doing for the environment – and join us in our efforts.”
